How Many Children Can Use a Bouncy Castle at Once?

The short answer

Capacity depends on the size of the castle, not on one number that applies to every unit. Every commercial inflatable carries a manufacturer's safety label stating its own maximum number of users, and a properly run hire keeps to that label rather than guessing, on top of an adult supervising the whole time it is inflated.

HSE guidance on inflatables is explicit on both points: the number of users at any one time must not exceed the maximum specified by the manufacturer, and bigger users must be kept separated from smaller ones. That is the rule to hold any operator to, rather than a fixed headcount that supposedly applies to every bouncy castle regardless of size.

Recommended numbers by castle size

Until our fleet is live and each unit's own manufacturer label is published on its booking page, the numbers below are our own guidance for a sensible group size, not a certified or legal limit. Treat them as a starting point for planning your party, not as the figure that will be printed on the castle itself.

Why supervision matters more than headcount

A correct headcount only helps if someone is actually watching the castle. An adult who counts children on at the start and then walks away has done half the job, because new children can climb on, a fall can happen unseen, or two children of very different sizes can end up bouncing together without anyone stepping in.

Our bouncy castle safety page covers what constant supervision actually means in practice, including where the supervising adult should stand and why a castle should never run unsupervised even for a few minutes. Read that alongside the numbers here rather than treating either on its own as the full picture.

Mixing ages on the same castle

Younger and much older children bouncing together raises the risk of a collision, simply because a heavier child's landing moves the whole surface more than a lighter child expects or can brace for. HSE guidance reflects this directly by requiring bigger users to be kept separated from smaller ones on the same inflatable.

For a party with a wide age range, the simplest fix is to run age groups in short shifts rather than letting everyone on at once. Five or ten minutes per group keeps the castle within a sensible size range for everyone using it and is easier for one supervising adult to manage than a mixed free for all.

Questions people ask before booking

How many children can use a bouncy castle at once?

There is no single number that covers every castle. HSE guidance requires the number of users at any one time to stay within the limit set by the equipment’s manufacturer, shown on the unit’s own safety label. For a standard 12ft by 12ft castle, our own guidance is up to 6 children of a similar size bouncing together.

Does the safe number change by castle size?

Yes. A bigger footprint generally means more usable bounce area, so a slide combi or an adult capable unit can reasonably take more children than a standard castle. See the table above for our guidance across the three sizes we plan to offer.

Should children of very different ages bounce together?

It is better avoided where you can manage it. A much smaller or lighter child sharing a castle with older, heavier children raises the chance of a collision, so running age groups in short shifts is worth planning for a party with a wide age range.

Who is responsible for counting and supervising children on the castle?

The supervising adult, for the whole time the castle is inflated. Full detail on what that supervision should look like is on our bouncy castle safety page.
